Your final numbers shift with your panel manufacturer, the brand and model you pick, your house location, your roof orientation, and your own household energy consumption, so I always tell people to treat this as a step-by-step method rather than a single formula, especially if you want 100% power coverage from your solar panels.

  Panel Count Formula

I like using two different ways to land on a real panel count, and both get you to a workable number once you trust the math.

The first leans on a production ratio, a figure I pull from EnergySage, and in my own case here in Texas that ratio sits around 1.5; take your yearly electricity usage in kWh (my own home ran 12,716 kWh), divide it by the production ratio, then divide again by your panel wattage, and a 400W panel gets you to roughly 21.9, which I always round up to 22 panels.
