SBI solar loan interest rate and solar project financing planning.
sbi solar loan interest rate

Families across Tamil Nadu keep asking me the sbi solar loan interest rate same thing in 2026: what does a solar loan really cost? A solar power system carries a big price upfront, so most households want financing that stays affordable in rupees every month.

Sbi Solar Loan Interest Rate

Each lender runs its own underwriting, so your borrower profile decides the sanctioned amount and the interest you pay.

In this guide I compare five banks, look at dedicated solar loan products and home-loan-linked products, and show how a borrower repays the loan through equated monthly instalments, or EMIs.

I also cover loan tenure, EMI calculations, document sbi solar loan interest rate requirements, installation and project cost. SBI’s government-linked bank product under PM Surya Ghar leads residential rooftop-solar loans, while green-energy loans from an NBFC or personal-loan routes usually cost more.

Bank-by-Bank Comparison

When I compare rates across India in 2026, the published rate changes a lot from one lender to the next. The data I worked from lists SBI starting from 5.75%, Bank of India at 7.90%, IOB at 7%, and Indian Overseas Bank with a 13% fixed option.

Punjab National Bank, or PNB, ties its price to the repo rate + 0.50%, so that loan stays floating. Loan caps run from Rs 2 lakh through Rs 6 lakh up to Rs 20 lakh, and Canara Bank and Bank of Baroda both sit in that range. Rooftop solar loans stretch to 120 months, or 10 years, and some schemes cover systems up to 10 kW.

Lenders ask for a 10% margin or a 5% margin, charge interest on a daily reducing balance, and sometimes advertise nil processing charges and nil prepayment charges.

The IOB Surya and IOB HL Surya products tie the housing-loan rate to your rating, credit score and home-loan relationship, and the bank keeps the  sbi solar loan interest rate equipment hypothecated with no collateral beyond that.

Dates such as 24 Aug 2026, 30 Jul 2025 and 31 August 2026 show up on these lender pages, so check which one your loan offer follows.

Every benchmark, spread and set of charges belongs on the product sheet and in the sanction terms, and a comparison blog or other editorial  sbi solar loan interest rate information should never replace the official page or scheme page of the government or the bank, whichever you use as a source for individuals, the loan amount and the tenure.

SBI Surya Ghar Loan

State Bank of India offers the Surya Ghar loan for residential solar financing under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The bank quotes 7.15 – 8.50 % per annum, and applicants with a CIBIL score of CIBIL 750+ land in the best interest rate tier at 7.15 % per annum

. In 2026 the loan reaches Rs 20 lakh, while smaller loans up to Rs 10 lakh need no collateral, third-party guarantee or property mortgage, which means no collateral for most home systems. The bank charges a 0.50 % processing fee plus GST, and it keeps a nil prepayment penalty

on your loan account, with optional credit life insurance on top. MNRE handles subsidy disbursement, and the bank builds subsidy integration  sbi solar loan interest rate straight into the loan. I call this the gold standard on every parameter: it offers the longest tenure of 10 years, the lowest interest rate, and lower EMIs. SBI branches open solar loan processing desks, and you can find them across Tamil Nadu.

Bank of Baroda Solar Loan

Bank of Baroda, a public-sector lender, runs its own solar loan product with a maximum tenure of 7 years, which is 3 years shorter than SBI. The interest runs 7.50 – 9.00 % per annum on a floating rate, and the bank adds a 0.50 % processing fee plus GST. You can borrow up to Rs 15 lakh, and loans up to Rs 7.5 lakh carry nil collateral.

The bank offers partial subsidy integration, so the borrower waits for the subsidy transfer and manages part of it by hand. A prepayment penalty may apply, and the shorter term pushes up higher monthly EMIs.

Its branch network reaches sbi solar loan interest rate  tier-2 cities in Tamil Nadu, and approvals and processing usually take 7 – 10 working days. Even with the maximum tenure at seven years, the rate stays competitive.

Canara Bank Solar Loan

Canara Bank, headquartered in Bengaluru, serves Tamil Nadu borrowers with a 5 years loan in its green energy loan category. It charges 8.00 – 9.50 % per annum for solar financing, plus a 0.50 % processing fee and GST, on a floating rate. You can borrow up to Rs 10 lakh, and loans up to Rs 5 lakh carry nil collateral.

The bank handles subsidy disbursement through manual subsidy integration, and a prepayment penalty may apply.

The shorter tenure means higher EMIs, but it also brings lower total interest paid. I find this loan works best for smaller systems, such as a 3 kW sbi solar loan interest rate  residential setup that needs only a modest loan amount, especially across southern Tamil Nadu.

PM Surya Ghar Loan And Subsidy

The central financial assistance under PM Surya Ghar pays Rs 30,000/kW for the first 2 kW, which comes to Rs 60,000 for 2 kW. The third kW adds Rs 18,000, so a system of 3 kW and above reaches Rs 78,000.

Under G.O. (Ms) No. 102, a  sbi solar loan interest rate Tamil Nadu state top-up of Rs 5,000 and another Rs 10,000 through TEDA can add to this, and my notes mention DBT payments of Rs 22,000 as well, so confirm each amount before you rely on it.

MNRE handles subsidy routing, and banks such as SBI, PNB and IOB often keep it adjusted to the loan account, which cuts the outstanding principal like a prepayment.

Some people talk about a zero-interest loan on 1 kW or a lender discount, but the scheme rules do not promise either. The subsidy never works as unrestricted cash: system eligibility, installation and verification come first, and only then does the bank reduce the sanctioned loan, the tenure and the principal for residential households.

Why Solar Loans Make Financial Sense?

A 5 kW rooftop solar system in Tamil Nadu costs about Rs 3.0 – 3.5 lakh before subsidy once the vendor has installed it. Under current TANGEDCO tariffs, a household often spends Rs 5,000 – 7,000 per month on electricity, so monthly sbi solar loan interest rate electricity savings can cover the loan EMI and keep cash flow steady. Banks like this deal because the government subsidy lowers the outstanding principal, and solar loans show low default rates over the tenure.

The asset earns money for you while you repay, and I think those fundamental economics explain why many owners feel from month one that solar pays for itself. I tell friends the same thing: smart banks lend against a roof that cuts the bill.

Floating Versus Fixed Rate

A floating rate moves with an external benchmark, while a fixed rate stays put for a stated period. Your spread stays the same, but the EMI or the remaining tenure can change when the benchmark shifts. A fixed rate usually starts higher, so ask your lender or bank how long the fixed period lasts.

Interest Rate Versus Total Borrowing Cost

The advertised interest rate tells only half the story. Insurance, processing fees, taxes on fees and documentation charges all raise the total amount repayable, and the prepayment cost matters too. Always compare the tenure and fees on the same loan amount before you pick a bank.

Collateral-Free Does Not Always Mean No Security

PM Surya Ghar loans still involve hypothecation: the bank takes a claim on the solar equipment, even without separate property collateral. Read the security clause in your sanction letter and confirm that you fall in the eligible small-loan slab.

Solar Loan EMI Calculation

Your EMI depends on the principal, the monthly interest rate and the number of instalments. Take Rs 2 lakh (Rs 2,00,000) at 7%, an annual sbi solar loan interest rate reducing-balance rate, over five years: the estimated EMI comes to Rs 3,960, and the estimated total interest on this reducing-balance loan is Rs 37,614.

The formula is EMI = P x r x (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n – 1), where P is the principal, r is the monthly rate and n is the number of monthly instalments; it leaves out fees and insurance. Stretch the loan from 5 years to 7 years and the monthly payments drop to Rs 3,019, but interest rises to Rs 53,557.

At 10 years the EMI falls to Rs 2,322, and interest climbs to Rs 78,660. A higher EMI gives lower total interest, a lower EMI gives much higher total interest, and seven years makes a middle ground in that trade-off. Remember that rate changes will move every number here, and the tenure you choose drives the result.

How Much Solar Loan Can You Get?

The project cost and your system capacity set the ceiling. SBI and PNB tie the amount to the margin contribution, your income and your credit profile, and for rooftop systems of 3 kW they often offer around Rs 2 lakh under the scheme limits.

Loans for systems above 3 kW can reach Rs 6 lakh, Bank of India goes up to 10 kW for individual borrowers, and IOB offers up to Rs 20 lakh  sbi solar loan interest rate based on eligible capacity under its IOB Surya scheme. The security and purpose matter, and no universal amount exists, so ask your bank for its maximum amount.

Solar Loan Eligibility

You need Indian citizenship, and PM Surya Ghar eligibility adds a suitable roof, home ownership, no prior solar-panel subsidy and a valid electricity connection.

For loan approval, the household and the lender look at your age against the repayment period and loan maturity, your rooftop rights, ownership, credit history, any write-off or default, and your repayment capacity from income.

Even for Rs 2 lakh, a bank-account relationship and margin contribution can matter. Expect site feasibility, a vendor quotation and portal registration,  sbi solar loan interest rate and know that SBI often looks for a minimum CIBIL score of 650 from applicants, sometimes with a savings account. Because universal eligibility rules do not exist, ask each bank.

Documents Commonly Required for Solar Loan

Banks start with KYC, PAN, address documents and electricity-bill details. Depending on your loan slab, they add property ownership papers and proof of rooftop rights, plus salary slips, bank statements, income-tax returns and Form 16.

You also submit the invoice, the vendor quotation, the vendor-customer agreement, the site-feasibility report, portal-generated records and the loan application. PNB, SBI and IOB follow different documentation rules, and the list shifts with your borrower type, loan size and lender.

How To Apply For A PM Surya Ghar Solar Loan?

Start on the PM Surya Ghar portal with your electricity connection and household details, then choose a registered vendor.

The vendor arranges the DISCOM feasibility check and gives a detailed quotation, and the portal journey records the equipment, system capacity, project cost and installation scope. Ask several lenders about tenure, using the same principal, then compare spread, rate type, fees, margin, prepayment, insurance and subsidy treatment.

Send the requested documents, or use JanSamarth, and wait for the sanction letter. After that, the bank can disburse funds, the DISCOM inspection follows  sbi solar loan interest rate the installation, and the subsidy claim and commissioning complete the government process with a subsidy credit.
